This compact, palm-sized mokugyo (woodfish) is crafted from tsuke (boxwood), a hard, resilient wood with a fine grain. It's an authentic mokugyo, but it's available in a compact size for easy home use. It's perfect for chanting sutras at your home Buddhist altar. It's said that the basic technique is to strike each kanji character in the sutra once to produce a sound. Because it's made from natural wood, each mokugyo will have its own unique grain and color. Because it's hand-carved, the carving pattern may vary slightly. The actual color may appear lighter and more whitish than shown in the image. Because it's made from unpainted, natural solid wood, it will discolor over time, developing a more refined hue. The sound it produces is not the typical "tap-tap" sound, but a slightly higher-pitched one.
