Amazon Review
Primal Scream have never rested on their laurels. "Dirty Hits" is arranged chronologically, highlighting their revolutionary journey with each album. The album kicks off with the acid-infused dub "Loaded" from their breakthrough album, "Screamadelica." The horns echo that album's espoused hedonism. It couldn't have been a more fitting opening track.
Fast forward a bit. "Give Out But Don't Give Up" sees the band take a surprising turn: unashamed rock & roll in the spirit of the Rolling Stones. This album gave birth to "Jailbird" and "Rocks." Just as "Give Out But Don't Give Up" was sealed away in the past, the shocking "Vanishing Point" arrived. They maintained their rock 'n' roll ethos while forcing it into a darker style. "Kowalski" and "Burning Wheel" perfectly sum up this style.
Riding high on this momentum, they released "Xtrmntr," a thick, rugged noise underpinned by burning synth melodies and bitter lyrics, resulting in hits like "Swastika Eyes" and "Kill all Hippies." Now, finally, "Dirty Hits" arrives. In addition to the tracks mentioned above, it features a few cuts from their recent album, "Evil Heat," which features more extreme, structured noise, and a previously unreleased version of "Some Velvet Morning" featuring Kate Moss.
Many argue that Primal Scream is a band that should be evaluated on an album-by-album basis and that a best-of album doesn't reveal their true potential. However, "Dirty Hits" is a thoroughly enjoyable listen, a stark reminder of just how much great music they've produced over the years. (David Trueman, Amazon.co.uk)
