This is a highly detailed 2-car set (Motorized + Trailer) of the JNR KiHa 40-500 Series (Mid-production type: No. 521–553), a general-purpose diesel railcar introduced in 1977, faithfully recreated in TOMIX’s High Grade (HG) specification.
●Faithful Reproduction of the Real Train
Designed for cold regions, this model accurately reproduces the unique features such as the upper-drop/lower-rise style sash windows and DT44A air-suspension bogies. External vertical rain gutters, altered window and seat arrangements, and other characteristics of the mid-production units are precisely modeled. The specific variations seen in cars from No. 521 onward are also carefully represented.
●TOMIX High Grade (HG) Specifications
Includes finely detailed painting and molding, front window defrosters, and constantly lit bluish-white LED lights (headlights, taillights, and destination sign). Comes with an ON/OFF switch. Car numbers and JR logos can be applied using included transfer sheets.
●Highly Customizable Configuration
The default front sign reads “Local” (navy background), with an exchangeable “Rapid” (white background) sign included. The model also offers four different types of selectable typhoon horns (slit and shutter styles in large/small sizes), allowing for a custom finish to your preference.
●Refined Running and Drive Performance
Equipped with a flywheel-powered M-13 motor that ensures smooth and quiet operation. The updated power collection system and blackened wheels provide excellent stability even through points and signals. TN couplers (SP) are standard for seamless connection with other vehicles.

H rubber parts are realistically rendered in gray, just like the real train. Seats inside the car are molded in a vivid blue, while the door rails and foot plates are accented with silver printing.

The set comes with runner parts such as train radio antennas, whistles, typhoon horns, front sign plates, and jumper hoses. Also includes diaphragm frames, snowplows, toilet drainage pipes, and jigs. With the transfer sheet, you can further enhance the visual detailing to your liking.
