The Kagero-class destroyers Hamakaze and Isokaze were also called the Japanese Navy's masterpiece destroyers. Hamakaze was completed on June 30, 1941 at Uraga Shipbuilding. During the naval battle, she participated in the air raids on Hawaii, and later served as an escort ship for aircraft carriers in Operation Midway, the Battle of the South Pacific, the Battle of Mariana Gulf, and the Battle of Leyte Gulf, but on April 7, 1945, she was killed in an air attack during the Okinawa kamikaze operation of the battleship Yamato. Isokaze was completed at the Navy Sasebo Arsenal on December 15, 1940, and as a state-of-the-art destroyer, she began escorting aircraft carrier task forces immediately after the war began. Although Isokaze fought through many naval battles, on April 7, 1945, she was severely damaged by an air attack during the Okinawa kamikaze operation of the battleship Yamato, and was destroyed by Yukikaze's artillery at sea level.
