Good points: - The balance between the clever draft and the simple tableau build is exquisite. - Although the play time is short at 10 rounds, the game has ups and downs, making it very satisfying. Not so good points: - A bit plain.
As the leader of an ancient tribe, players acquire various cards, give jobs to their tribesmen, construct buildings, and improve the lives of their tribes in order to win. The main system of the game is "tableau building," in which various cards are acquired through drafting and placed on the field to obtain their effects. However, in "Methos," this tableau building part is made very simple. Basically, players collect icons and fulfill conditions to gain more points, and special effects are also orthodox.
The core of the Methos system is the "draft" section, where players select and acquire cards. Placing a piece on a tile depicting how to acquire a card changes the order in which players select cards and the number of cards they will acquire. If you turn earlier, you will have a greater number of eligible cards and a wider range of options, but you will acquire fewer cards. Choose cards faster, or acquire more cards? It's a simple decision, but the dilemma is exceptional. Additionally, it's important to keep in mind that the player who selects a card first will have an earlier turn to "place a piece on a tile" in the next round, and will also be able to acquire the important resource of food.
Because the card contents and tableau building system are simple, each card has a big impact, and the number of cards acquired directly translates to victory. The simplicity of the tableau building also brings out the challenge of the draft, making this a title that will impress with its exquisite balance. *Due to a specification change in the final manufacturing process, the rulebook states that there are "15" 5-food tokens, but the actual number is "14."
