Product Introduction
The Mikuma, now a heavy cruiser thanks to its refitted main guns, is back with newly designed common parts.
This is an unpainted kit that requires assembly and painting.
The scale is 1/700, and this underwater model does not include the ship's bottom.
This product is comprised of both the previous (special series) mold and a new additional mold.
This product is based on the second Mogami-class ship, the Mikuma, from the start of the Pacific War to the Battle of Midway in June 1942.
The hull cross-section is different from that of the Suzuya and Kumano, and the standard portholes at the start of the war are reproduced in their unobstructed state using special parts.
New molds were used to standardize the accuracy of equipment reproductions due to differences in product release dates, and some parts are divided to accommodate painting.
The 12.7cm twin anti-aircraft gun A1 Kai 1 is divided into six parts, improving the modeling resolution from the existing two-part version.
The 9-meter cutter is made into two parts to allow for easy painting, and the mount is available as a separate part, with the option of a one-piece molded deck.
The 12-meter motorized launch can now be recreated without the canvas.
The 11-meter motorized boat has the canvas and wheelhouse/engine room canopy made into separate parts to allow for painting. Each part is painted first, and then assembled and glued together later.
The boat mount's uneven shape and light holes are molded in, adding a sense of precision.
A new chrysanthemum crest has been added for the bow.
New sidelights and life buoys have been added. The former is to standardize the size of each ship, and the latter is used to add detail to parts that were previously omitted.
Decals have been added for the stern ship name (filled in naval colors) and the white line on the mast.
The Type 96 25mm twin machine gun now comes as a two-part part as standard, reducing the amount of painting required.
Hull Structure
- The hull of the Mogami and Mikuma, featuring a large angle of inclination of the sides at mid-deck level, is recreated using dedicated parts.
- The portholes, which differ from those on the aircraft carrier Mogami, are recreated in their unobstructed form.
- The outboard electrical wiring is molded as a single unit into the hull, recreating individual differences such as differences in position near the stern and a higher central position.
- The central section of the outboard electrical wiring, which differs from the Mogami, is recreated using a dedicated etched part. Some parts are machined and attached.
- The width of the ship near the shelter deck is recreated by 1.0 mm (on the model) wider than that of the Suzuya/Kumano.
Bridge/Foremast
- The forward mast is dedicated to the Mogami/Mikuma and recreates the difference in height (slightly lower) compared to the Suzuya.
- The position observation post equipped with the Type 92 torpedo launch control system, a feature at the start of the war, is recreated.
- The bridge windows are provided with clear parts for a more realistic finish.
The floors of the air defense command post and compass bridge feature delicate gratings carved into the design.
Special parts are used to recreate the boiler room air intakes on both sides of the rear bridge, which are only found on the Mogami/Mikuma.
Chimney/Air Intake/Linoleum Deck
The deck access hatches are designed to minimize complexity by minimizing the height and avoiding paint separation at hatch height.
The Mogami/Mikuma are equipped with 12 boilers, and the thick, two-pronged chimney at the front is recreated using a special part.
The funnel cap is a molded part that appears "loose."
The steam exhaust pipe is a separate part designed to enhance the sense of precision, exclusive to the Mogami/Mikuma.
The boiler room air intake below the chimney has a smaller intake surface on the Mogami/Mikuma, which differentiates it from the Suzuya using a special part.
- A dedicated part is used for the machine gun turret next to the funnel to recreate the unique outline shape of the Mogami/Mikuma.
- A distinctive feature of the Mogami/Mikuma is the V-shaped air intake behind the funnel (below the searchlight).
- The linoleum deck is prepared with a dedicated part, as the placement of the ventilation shafts and equipment differs from that of the Suzuya/Kumano.
Antenna Mount/Antenna Support
- The 12.7cm twin anti-aircraft gun mount is a dedicated part for the Mogami/Mikuma, with a flat underside.
- The antenna support mounted on the canopy of the 3rd and 4th main gun turrets is a dedicated part that recreates the unique shape of each ship.
Aft Mast/Aft Bridge/Crane
- The aft mast features a Y-shaped, rearward-sloping top that is dedicated to the Mogami/Mikuma.
- The floatplane hoisting and storage crane features light holes on the sides and top, recreated using a slide mold, and the hook is also delicately sculpted.
The aft bridge features a special part that recreates the multiple small air intakes on the side, a feature unique to the Mogami and Mikuma.
Shelter Deck/Aircraft Operation Deck
The shelter, where the torpedo tubes are located, is recreated based on official drawings, including the spare torpedo bays.
The Kure Type 2 Catapult (Kure Type 5) features a realistic side and top design, created using a slide mold.
Aircraft
The molding color is gray to improve workability (to prevent damage when cutting the gate).
