Born in Yugoslavia and educated in Vienna, Matacic began his career at opera houses in Yugoslavia and went on to serve as music director at opera houses in Dresden, Frankfurt, and Monte Carlo. He also made numerous guest appearances with opera houses and orchestras around the world, including Bayreuth and Berlin.
He visited Japan to conduct the Slavic Opera in 1965 and the Italian Opera in 1971. He also guest-starred with the NHK Symphony Orchestra from 1966 to 1969, 1973, 1975, and 1984, becoming the orchestra's honorary conductor. In response to passionate fan demand, we are re-releasing this stunning live recording of what would become his final performance with the NHK Symphony Orchestra.
