In 1960, Leo Fender introduced a circuit in his Bandmaster and Vibrasonic amplifiers called "harmonic tremolo" (a term that was later misnamed, as it turned out to be a volume effect, not a pitch effect). The toggle switch in the up position gives you a great sounding amp tremolo (a tremolo that increases or decreases the signal), while the toggle switch in the down position gives you a harmonic tremolo effect.
