When using this 60ml diamond-shaped glass for sake, its special functions are basically the same as for strong alcoholic beverages such as whiskey, but it needs to be appropriately adjusted according to the drinking characteristics of sake. Suitable for small-volume sake consumption: 60ml is about one-third of a go (180ml) of sake, or 1.5 to 2 times the size of a standard "ochoko" (small sake cup). It is suitable for tasting small amounts of chilled or room-temperature sake at once, and especially for high-quality sakes such as ginjo and daiginjo, where aroma is important, it prevents the dissipation of the aroma by pouring a large amount at once, allowing you to enjoy it carefully in several sips. Enhanced visual and sensory experience with the diamond-cut polyhedron: The rhombus/diamond pattern cut of the glass body creates strong refraction and brilliance when light enters it, adding a sense of luxury and ritual to the clarity and color of sake. By taking advantage of the clear characteristics of sake and significantly enhancing its "visual appeal," it is particularly effective in dining settings and social occasions. Actual Impact on the Aroma and Taste of Sake Aroma Release: The multi-faceted cut creates small vortices when lightly shaken, increasing air contact and slightly promoting the release of fruity, floral, and rice aromas in ginjo-style sake. However, compared to tulip-shaped glasses or wine glasses designed for aroma concentration, the wider opening means it retains aromas less effectively, making it more suited to "quick drinking" or "visual appeal." Taste Expression: The wide opening allows the sake to come into contact with a wider area of the tongue, emphasizing the refreshing sensation and crisp finish of junmai-shu and nama-zake. On the other hand, for aged sake or yamahai-style sake that emphasize sweetness and umami, it may be more difficult to concentrate the taste buds compared to a narrow-mouthed sake cup. Temperature Retention: The thick walls and slow heat conduction make it easier to maintain the low temperature of chilled sake for a certain period of time. Suitable Sake Types and Recommended Drinking: This glass is especially ideal for the following uses: Chilled or room-temperature sake with prominent aromas (daiginjo, ginjo, etc.). This glass is suitable for quick "shot" style drinking, or for regular sake and honjozo sake at izakayas and parties. It is not suitable for fine sake that requires long, leisurely tasting (because the wide opening causes delicate aromas to dissipate quickly), and we recommend sake-specific vessels such as Toyo Sasaki's "Tenkai" series or cut glass cups. Comparison with other sake cups Traditional sake vessels (ochoko, guinomi) mainly have a capacity of 30-90ml, but the diamond cut is positioned as a modern version of the popular "Edo Kiriko" style sake cup. It combines the aesthetics of traditional crafts with the practicality of modern design, possessing both decorative and functional qualities. If it is made of hand-cut Edo Kiriko or high-quality crystal glass, the light and shadow effects and texture further enhance the ritualistic feeling of drinking sake. In summary, the special functions of this glass for sake are mainly summarized as a visual sense of luxury, control of small volume, and gentle aeration. While not suitable for professional tastings requiring a high level of aroma concentration, this glass is an excellent choice for everyday, leisurely drinking occasions, combining aesthetics and practicality.
