The vajra is a ritual implement that represents the Buddha's teachings of eliminating worldly desires and expressing bodhicitta (the mind seeking enlightenment), and is likened to a weapon in Indian mythology.
It is used in esoteric Buddhist rituals in the Shingon and Tendai sects, as well as in Segaki ceremonies in the Shingon, Tendai and Zen sects. Its basic shape is rod-shaped with a handle (the onimoku section) in the middle. The onimoku is visualized as Dainichi Nyorai, and practitioners grasp the bulge as a practice to become one with Dainichi Nyorai. It has spear-shaped blades on the top and bottom. There are several variations depending on the number and shape of the blades, and each has its own name.
The three-pronged vajra is a type of vajra, with two points on both ends of the single-pronged vajra, and the sides of the vajra are curved into a hook shape, like a bird's beak. The handle is broadly divided into those with demon eyes and those with demon masks. They also represent the three secret teachings of body, speech, and mind, and the Vajra-te Vajra and Vajra-gundari are considered to have the Sammaya form.
